The foundation of the central administration was laid for the first time in India by the<strong> Regulating Act of 1773.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Features of Regulating Act 1773:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It designated the <strong>Governor of Bengal<\/strong> as the<strong> \u2018Governor-General of Bengal\u2019<\/strong>, and a four-member <strong>Executive Council<\/strong> was formed to assist the Governor-General of Bengal.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lord Warren Hastings<\/strong> was appointed the<strong> first Governor-General of Bengal<\/strong> and it was also the last governor of Bengal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Regulating Act of 1773 made the governor of <strong>Bombay<\/strong> and <strong>Madras<\/strong> subordinate to the <strong>Governor-General of Bengal<\/strong>. Before the Regulating act 1773, these presidencies are independent of each other.<\/p>\n<p>By this act, a<strong> Supreme Court<\/strong> was established in <strong>Kolkata (1774)<\/strong> comprising <strong>one Chief Justice<\/strong> and<strong> 3 other judges<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sir Elijah Impey<\/strong> was appointed the<strong> first chief justice<\/strong> of the Supreme Court at <strong>Fort William<\/strong> in Kolkata (Bengal).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It prohibited the <strong>employers<\/strong> of the company to engage in any <strong>private trade<\/strong> or taking <strong>presents<\/strong> or <strong>bribes&#8217;<\/strong> from the natives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This Regulating Act of 1773 was the first step taken by the British Government to control and regulate the East India Company in India.
